Who can marry you in Washington — and where the courthouse fits in

Three groups of people may legally solemnize a Washington marriage under RCW 26.04.050: active or retired judges, justices, and court commissioners; judges of tribal courts from federally recognized tribes; and any regularly licensed or ordained minister, priest, imam, rabbi, or similar official of a religious organization. The statute sets no denominational test and the state keeps no officiant registry, which is why ministers ordained online — Universal Life Church and similar bodies — routinely perform ceremonies here, making it straightforward to have a friend officiate.

Courthouse options exist on both ends of Puget Sound. Seattle Municipal Court judges perform ceremonies at the courthouse at 4:30 p.m. on weekdays, King County District Court judges officiate by appointment outside regular court hours including weekends, and in Tacoma, Pierce County District Court judges marry couples — you contact the judge directly to schedule, while the Pierce County Auditor handles licensing separately.

Whoever officiates, the closing mechanics are identical: signed paperwork, attested by two witnesses over 18, returns to the issuing auditor for recording. And because the license only becomes usable on the third day after application, a spontaneous courthouse wedding still demands applying earlier in the week.
